Austin Zack 

Southwest Area – June 2022

In the early hours of August 26, 2022, and late in his midnight shift, Austin Zack was assigned the Burlington radar position when N84063 requested assistance.  The pilot stated he was a VFR flight inbound to IKK (Kankakee) airport and was caught in the fog at 1,900 feet.  When Austin asked the pilot if he was IFR-rated, the pilot stated he had many IFR hours, but was not certified.  Austin advised the pilot to maintain his current altitude and he would work to find a suitable airport.  GYY (Gary, IN) airport was reporting ceiling as 3,400 broken.  Austin asked the pilot if he was able to fly a 360-degree heading and climb 500’.  The pilot replied in the affirmative and executed the climb and turn.

Over the next five minutes, Austin provided suggested headings and altitudes with a calm, steady voice.  He updated the pilot on observed heading and altitude, as well as GYY ceiling/cloud cover reports.  When Austin saw the aircraft veering off course, he advised the pilot and queried the pilot if he was seeing any openings in the weather.  He also updated the pilot on position and range from GYY.  As the aircraft approached Chicago TRACON airspace, Austin provided information regarding the flight, ensuring continuity of services.

Chicago Center nominated Mr. Zack for an Archie League Award in 2022 for his actions during this emergency. Unfortunately, Austin did not receive the national recognition we believe he deserves, but ZAU is very proud of Austin’s professionalism and actions to care for the pilot of N84063. Great work, Austin!
